Interview with Nobrvnd – French Manila Coffee

Who is Nobrvnd ? Who is Brandon Garcia ? How different and how similar are the two ? How is your being a musician interchange with and/or deviate from you as a director, and as a producer, as a writer ?

So my name is Brandon. And Nobrvnd is basically an anagram for my name Brandon. So it’s just like a mixed up letter of the letters. Nobrvnd is part of who Brandon is. That’s the musical version of Brandon. The reason why I got Nobrvnd is because I wanted to evolve.

I don’t want to be the same person all the time. I don’t want to be stagnant. I don’t want to be in just one place. The reason why I picked that name is because I want to explore a lot of things. So I guess Nobrvnd is a director. Nobrvnd is a producer. Nobrvnd is a writer. Or maybe someday, a clothing designer. A fashion designer. Who knows? I want to get into that. I’m also a graphic artist where I paint, I do illustrations, and I guess that’s also part of who Nobrvnd is.

I think what Nobrvnd is, is more like someone who creates something. Brandon is personal, it’s someone who is me. Like the real me. Nobrvnd is a mask, basically. Not that it’s fake, but it’s someone that creates. That’s another side of me, I guess. Nobrvnd is someone who likes to take risks because I myself don’t really like being around a lot of people. I have social anxiety or maybe I am ambivalent. I am more open with people I like and then shrink up when there’s a lot of people that I don’t know or some people that I don’t like. But when I get on the stage, I think I’m a different person. Like that’s where Nobrvnd shines. That is not Brandon. I don’t act like that in real life.

Can you tell us more about your challenges/hardships as an artist, and as a human ? What is the most challenging thing about being a musician today? And what is the most challenging thing about being a musician in the Philippines ?

It’s also like a double edged sword that I want to evolve. Sometimes I get confused in what I really want. [As for] the hardships of being a musician here in the Philippines, it’s really hard because everyone wants to be heard. So there’s a lot of noise. There’s a lot of noise that I need to get away from or to stand out from. And as a human person, I’m very critical of myself. It’s like when I feel stagnated, I feel like I’m a failure as a person, as a human being. I feel like I’m worthless. The [most difficult thing] right now is having a creative block.

It’s like, like any other artist will relate to this. It’s like I have energy spikes. Like there are times that, oh, I have a lot of songs, and then there are like months, like real, like long days that I can create songs. I don’t know how to make songs. It’s like sometimes it’s, it’s just hard.

There’s a lot of artists now. It’s about wanting to be unique, wanting to be unique, and you want to find other ways to be unique. And then that’s the time you overthink and then the magic’s gotten, you know, it’s like you overthink a lot and then you get shy and then you get less confident.
And now you don’t know what to do next because you might think that what you’re going to create now is just a waste of time and it’s nothing.

Who are your inspirations as an artist ? Who are your inspirations as a human ?

My favorite ones are Post Malone, Skrillex. These people are at the same time my inspiration as a human being because just like Post Malone, he’s such a kind person, No one to be that kind of person. And he’s so human. He’s so real in every in all the videos I’ve seen, I’ve never seen a person really I mean, I never seen him mad. It’s so hard to see him mad. And Skrillex, I like how he evolved into a deejay, a producer because he started from a rock band. And then after that he went solo and then he became a producer. He has a Grammy nomination. I think he’s a Grammy winner. for producing for Justin Bieber. If you know the Purpose album, he co-produced that album.

It’s so inspiring. Since I came from a hardcore background. I used to be in a rock band before, and then I decided to go that path too. So eventually I wanted to be the next Skrillex. I’m joking.

You are based in Metro Manila. Did you grow up here ? How would you describe Metro Manila ? How are you as a human and as an artist related to the place ?

So I was born here in Manila and I would describe Manila as a gritty place, which is not bad. I like how raw it is. It’s full of talent. That’s what I see. Manila is full of gems. If you know what you’re looking for. Manila is basically my breeding ground of being an artist. Like this is where I became an artist.

You have traveled a lot. Would you ever trade Manila for other cities ?

I don’t relate to those places because I wasn’t born there. I didn’t stay there for long. I wouldn’t trade the Philippines for anything. I guess I would love to go there to visit my relatives, but nothing else because it’s not really relatable to me.

What do you like about Metro Manila ? What do you not like about Metro Manila ?

What I like about Manila is that, like I said, it’s full of gems. It’s full of artists; it’s full of culture. I mean, the culture is so rich here in the Philippines. It’s not just Manila. It’s all over the Philippines. Everyone in the Philippines is talented. And what I hate about Manila is that it’s so busy. That’s it, That’s it. I love the people here. People are so joyful compared to, let’s see, Europe.

Where is your favorite place in Metro Manila ? Why ?

My favorite place here in the Philippines is my old apartment here in Makati. It is where I started really producing at the age of 15 or 16 years old. It was ground zero of where I started really making music.

It’s a project of mine at the moment. I’m going to a recording session later. The topic is about basically where I am in life right now. And it mostly talks about being in this wave of people that want to be heard. So I guess that would be my song for Manila.

If you are going to sing and create a song about Metro Manila, what would it be like ?

Qui est Nobrvnd ? Qui est Brandon Garcia ? Quelles sont les différences et les similitudes entre les deux ? Comment le fait d’être musicien interagit-il avec et/ou s’écarte-t-il de vous en tant que réalisateur, producteur et scénariste ?

Je m’appelle Brandon, et Nobrvnd, est l’anagramme de mon prénom : Brandon. Il s’agit donc d’un mélange de lettres…Et Nobrvnd fait partie de l’identité de Brandon. Il s’agit en fait de la version musicale de Brandon C’est donc la raison pour laquelle j’ai choisi Nobrvnd, parce que je voulais évoluer. Je ne veux pas être toujours la même personne, je ne veux pas stagné, je ne veux pas me limiter à un seul endroit.

La raison pour laquelle j’ai choisi ce nom, est que je veux explorer beaucoup de choses. On peut dire que Nobrvnd est un réalisateur, Nobrvnd est un producteur, Nobrvnd est écrivain. Ou peut-être un jour, un créateur de vêtements ou un couturier, qui sait ? J’ai envie d’essayer.

Je suis également un graphiste, je peins, je fais des illustrations et je pense que cela fait aussi partie de ce qu’est Nobrvnd. Je pense que Nobrvnd est plutôt quelqu’un qui crée quelque chose. Brandon est personnel, c’est quelqu’un qui est moi, le vrai moi. Nobrvnd est un masque, enfin pas vraiment. Il n’est pas faux, mais c’est un créateur. C’est une autre facette de moi.

Nobrvnd est une personne qui aime prendre des risques. Quant à moi, je n’aime pas vraiment être entouré de beaucoup de gens. Je suis socialement anxieux ou peut-être ambivertie. Donc… Je suis plus ouvert avec les gens que j’aime et je me rétracte quand il y a beaucoup de gens que je ne connais pas ou des gens que je n’aime pas. Je pense que quand j’entre en scène je suis une personne différente. C’est sur la scène que Nobrvnd brille. Ce n’est pas Brandon. Je ne suis pas comme ça dans la vraie vie.

Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus sur vos défis et vos difficultés en tant qu’artiste et en tant qu’être humain ? Quel est le plus grand défi pour un musicien aujourd’hui ? Et qu’est-ce qui est le plus difficile dans le fait d’être musicien aux Philippines ?

Mes difficultés sont le fait que je veuille évoluer est une arme à double tranchant, il m’arrive de ne pas savoir ce que je veux vraiment, et aussi des difficultés d’être un musicien aux Philippines. C’est très difficile parce que tout le monde veut être entendu. Donc il y a beaucoup de bruit dont je dois m’éloigner ou me démarquer.

En tant qu’être humain je suis très critique envers moi-même. Quand je stagne, j’ai l’impression d’être un échec, j’ai l’impression que je ne vaux rien. Donc, je pense que la chose la plus difficile en ce moment est d’avoir un blocage créatif, tous les autres artistes le savent. J’ai des pics d’énergie. Il y a des moments où j’ai beaucoup de chansons, et puis il y a des jours, des mois, où je n’arrive pas à créer de chansons, où je ne sais pas comment faire des chansons. C’est difficile parfois.

La raison pour laquelle il existe un blocage créatif, c’est parce qu’il y a beaucoup d’artistes. Nous voulons être uniques, et nous voulons trouver d’autres moyens de l’être, alors c’est le moment où l’on réfléchit trop, et la magie disparaît. C’est comme si tu réfléchissais trop, tu devenais timide, tu perdais confiance en toi. Et maintenant, tu ne sais plus quoi faire parce que tu penses, peut-être que ce que tu vas créer maintenant n’est qu’une perte de temps, et que ce n’est rien.

Quelles sont vos inspirations en tant qu’artiste ? Quelles sont tes inspirations en tant qu’être humain ?

Mes préférés sont : Post Malone et Skrillex, ces personnes sont ma source d’inspiration en tant qu’être humain, parce que tout comme Post Malone qui est très gentil, je veux être comme lui. Il est tellement humain. Il est tellement vrai dans toutes les vidéos que j’ai vues, Je n’ai jamais vu une personne comme lui Je ne l’ai jamais vu en colère. C’est si difficile de le voir en colère.

Et Skrillex J’aime la façon dont il a évolué, parce qu’il a commencé avec un groupe de rock, ensuite, il s’est lancé en solo, puis il est devenu producteur pour finalement être nommé aux Grammy Awards. Je pense qu’il a gagné un Grammy, pour avoir produit pour Justin Bieber, pour l’album Purpose. Il a coproduit cet album. C’est inspirant parce que je faisais de la musique hardcore. J’ai déjà fait partie d’un groupe de rock,
et puis j’ai décidé de me lancer en solo moi aussi. J’aimerais être le prochain Skrillex…Je plaisante !

Vous êtes basé à Manille. Avez-vous grandi ici ? Comment décririez-vous Metro Manila ? Quel rapport entretenez-vous avec cet endroit en tant qu’être humain et en tant qu’artiste ?

Je suis donc né ici, à Manille. Je décrirais Manille comme…un endroit rude, ce qui n’est pas mal. J’aime son côté brut. Elle est pleine de talents. C’est ce que je vois. Manille est pleine de trésors si vous savez ce que vous cherchez. Je suis lié à Manille. C’est en fait mon terrain de jeu en tant qu’artiste. C’est ici où je suis devenu artiste.

Vous avez beaucoup voyagé. Échangeriez-vous Manille contre d’autres villes ?

Je ne m’identifie pas à d’autres endroits parce que je n’y suis pas né. Je n’y suis jamais resté longtemps, je pense que je n’échangerais les Philippines pour rien au monde. J’aimerais aller dans d’autres endroits, rendre visite à ma famille, mais rien d’autre parce que je ne m’y reconnais pas.

Qu’est-ce qui vous plaît dans Metro Manila ? Qu’est-ce que vous n’aimez pas dans Manille ?

Ce que j’aime à Manille, c’est que c’est une ville pleine de trésors, il y a plein d’artistes, il y a beaucoup de culture. La culture est si riche ici, aux Philippines. Il n’y a pas que Manille, il y a tout les Philippines. Tous les habitants du pays sont talentueux. Ce que je déteste à Manille, c’est que c’est trop chargé. Mais c’est tout. J’aime les gens ici, les gens sont si joyeux par rapport à l’Europe.

Quel est votre endroit préféré à Manille ? Pourquoi ?

Je pense que mon endroit préféré, ici aux Philippines, c’est mon ancien appartement à Makati C’est là que j’ai commencé à produire à l’âge de de 15 ou 16 ans. Je pense que c’était le point zéro, le point zéro où j’ai commencé à faire de la musique.

Si vous deviez chanter et créer une chanson sur Metro Manila, à quoi ressemblerait-elle ?

C’est un projet que j’ai en ce moment, je vais participer à une session d’enregistrement plus tard. Il parle d’où j’en suis dans ma vie en ce moment. Il s’agit surtout de faire partie de cette vague de personnes qui veulent être entendues. Je pense donc que ça sera ça ma chanson pour Manille.
